UK Sets Up AI Biosecurity Lab Backed by £100 Million in Funding
The UK government has established the AI Biosecurity Lab (AIBL) with £100 million in funding. It will use advanced AI to detect biological threats and speed up the development of vaccines and treatments.

The UK government has created the AI Biosecurity Lab (AIBL) as part of its National AI Biosecurity Initiative, committing £100 million (about $134 million) to the project. The lab aims to use cutting-edge artificial intelligence to spot biological threats earlier and to speed up the development of vaccines and other medical treatments.
The lab will bring together experts in biosecurity and life sciences. It will operate as an independent, non-profit organization while also working with public-sector bodies and academic institutions.
Why the initiative was launched
The government says AI systems are "creating unprecedented opportunities for scientific discovery" but also create new biological risks and could lower barriers to harmful activity. As an example, the article cites an AI research lab in California that recently claimed it had used AI to create a virus and administered it to a human patient. The virus was designed to infect antibiotic-resistant bacteria rather than for any malicious purpose, but the case shows how frontier AI can be applied in biotechnology.
Officials said the lab's research will strengthen UK and global resilience to a wide range of biological risks, including those enabled by advances in AI. Kanishka Narayan, Britain's AI minister, described it as a major new global institution that will combine world-leading scientific expertise to protect people from emerging biological threats and ensure Britain leads in AI safety and security.
Industry backing
OpenAI is providing £100 million in credits that the lab can use to access its most advanced models and computing infrastructure. Anthropic will supply the same amount in model credits. The lab will also collaborate with Google DeepMind and Basecamp Research, a UK AI life sciences company. DeepMind's biosecurity experts will take part in research and provide access to frontier Gemini models, while Basecamp will contribute AI biology models and its technical expertise in biosecurity challenges.
