UK may turn captured Russian tanker’s cargo into cash for Ukraine’s troops
The United Kingdom is considering selling crude oil seized from a Russian shadow-fleet tanker and using the proceeds to support Ukraine's military.
Royal Marines boarded a tanker belonging to Russia's so-called shadow fleet in the English Channel. The vessel was carrying a cargo of crude oil.
The UK is now exploring the possibility of selling the confiscated oil cargo and directing the funds to Ukraine's armed forces. Such a move would represent a novel way to support Ukraine in its war against Russian aggression.
The shadow fleet consists of older, poorly insured ships that Russia uses to circumvent international sanctions on oil exports. Selling the cargo and transferring the money to Ukraine could set a precedent for future actions against sanctions violators.
