Liepiņš: Analyzing Mountain Tragedies Is Not About Destroying Reputations
Latvian mountaineers Kristīne and Kristaps Liepiņš advocate for thorough analysis of mountain accidents to learn from mistakes, rather than just expressing condolences or assigning blame. They stress that such analysis is common worldwide and helps future climbers avoid similar errors.

Recent accidents involving Latvian climbers—three deaths on Denali in Alaska and an injury on Mont Blanc—have sparked calls for a more systematic approach to incident analysis. According to mountaineers and instructors Kristīne and Kristaps Liepiņš, the public often focuses on rescue operations and condolences but stops short of examining what went wrong.
In a podcast interview, the Liepiņš couple emphasized that analysis is not about tarnishing reputations but about understanding the chain of decisions. "After every accident in the mountains, there is an investigation. The public has access to information about what happened, why, and what mistakes were made," explained Kristīne Liepiņa. She noted that sometimes nature plays a role, but often human factors are involved. The analysis looks at route choice, group preparation, equipment, weather, and timing.
Kristaps Liepiņš highlighted that in Latvia, such discussions are often seen as personal attacks. The case of renowned climber Teodors Ķirsis, who died on Aoraki (Mount Cook) in New Zealand, exemplifies this reluctance. "Many say, 'Don't talk about Ķirsis; he couldn't have made a mistake.' But we must talk about the mistakes—there are many," said Kristaps. He pointed out that the group's attitude, decisions before the climb, and actions on the route are all relevant.
The pair also discussed changes in mountain conditions. Mont Blanc, once considered accessible, has become significantly more dangerous due to melting glaciers and increased crevasse risk. Similarly, Mount Kazbek in Georgia is changing, yet climbers often rely on outdated perceptions. Physical fitness alone is not enough; mental attitude and appropriate training are crucial.
Commercial expeditions have made famous peaks more accessible but also create a false sense of security. "Is it mountaineering if someone else carries your gear, sets up tents, and prepares food?" asked Kristaps Liepiņš. He compared using supplemental oxygen on Everest to racing with an e-bike. The high cost of Everest (around €100,000 per person) contrasts with numerous other peaks that offer similar challenges at a fraction of the price.
Accident analysis also covers communication and timing of rescue calls. The Liepiņš couple urged the public to embrace such reviews as a learning tool: "Life is too short to learn only from your own mistakes," concluded Kristīne Liepiņa.
