Liepnieks: too early to predict voter turnout ahead of Saeima elections
Political commentator Jurģis Liepnieks says there is not yet enough data to predict voter turnout ahead of Latvia's October 3 parliamentary elections, since many voters remain undecided. He noted that some will only make their final choice inside the voting booth.
Ahead of the 15th Saeima elections scheduled for October 3, political commentator and writer Jurģis Liepnieks said on TV24's program "Preses klubs" that there are currently no sufficient indicators to predict how active voters will be.
Liepnieks noted that current polling figures do not stand out significantly compared to previous election cycles, meaning no reliable forecast can be made at this stage.
What makes Latvia's case different
According to the commentator, Latvia's electoral situation is complicated by the fact that voters do not face a simple choice between two major alternatives, unlike in many other countries. A binary choice would make decision-making easier, since voters could rely on historical loyalty or a clear favorite.
In Latvia, however, the field of options is broad, yet none of the available parties feels particularly convincing to a portion of voters. Liepnieks described this as "a huge palette of possible choices, none of which stands out."
The role of undecided voters
Liepnieks believes the group of undecided voters could prove decisive for the election outcome. He recalled that during previous elections, when more extensive sociological research was conducted, a pattern emerged: as election day approached, the number of undecided voters gradually shrank.
Still, even on election day itself, some people make their final decision at the very last moment — sometimes while already standing inside the voting booth, looking over the party list slips. For this reason, Liepnieks said it is still too early to draw conclusions either about expected turnout or about how much influence last-minute deciders will have on the final result.
