Lithuania Prepares to Dismantle Active Zones of Ignalina NPP Reactors
Lithuania is preparing to dismantle the active zones of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant's Chernobyl-type reactors, a world-first operation.

Lithuania has begun preparations to dismantle the active zones of the reactors at the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), according to the Lithuanian public broadcaster LRT. These reactors are of the Chernobyl type, and such work will be carried out for the first time in the world.
The Ignalina NPP was a major electricity producer for Lithuania, but it was shut down after the country joined the European Union. Dismantling the active zones of the reactors is a complex and hazardous process, requiring extreme caution due to the high levels of radioactivity characteristic of Chernobyl-type reactors.
This is the first time globally that such a dismantling operation has been attempted, and it could serve as a model for other countries operating similar technology. Lithuanian officials emphasize that the work will be conducted under the strictest safety standards to ensure environmental protection and public health.
The project marks a significant step in Lithuania's efforts to decommission nuclear facilities and move toward a more sustainable energy future.
