The state-owned operator Lithuanian Airports said on Friday that the country's airports will offer 74 scheduled and charter routes in the winter aviation season, which begins on Sunday. That is six fewer than a year earlier. In October last year, the company had announced that more than 80 routes would operate across the three airports during the winter.

Vilnius Airport will serve 48 destinations, Kaunas Airport 15 and Palanga Airport six. At the same time, flight frequencies will increase on 15 routes. Gintarė Norvilaitė-Tautevičė, interim CEO of Lithuanian Airports, pointed to a new route to Geneva and a wider choice of direct flights to European capitals, including Wizz Air flights to Berlin that have already started.

More frequent flights

Flights to Warsaw and Helsinki will rise by an average of four per week. Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Stockholm and Brussels will each get one extra weekly flight. In December, flights to Reykjavik will increase to three per week. Kaunas will add two weekly flights to Edinburgh and one each to London, Liverpool, Alicante and Stockholm. Flights from Palanga to Copenhagen will also become more frequent.

New destinations

Passengers will be able to fly directly from Lithuania to three southern European destinations: Alicante and Malaga in Spain, and Paphos in Cyprus. From Vilnius, direct flights will serve 20 European capitals this winter, two more than last season. Direct services to Prague and Reykjavik, launched in the summer, will continue through the winter. Vilnius will also have flights to Barcelona, Malaga, Malta, Larnaca in Cyprus, Dubai and Tenerife.

In January, airBaltic will launch direct flights from Vilnius to Geneva, while Wizz Air will begin flights to Grenoble, France. Wizz Air's service to Gdansk, Poland, launched in the summer, will continue. Norwegian will fly from Palanga to Bergen, Norway, over the Christmas period.

Charter flights from Vilnius are planned to Antalya in Turkey, Tenerife in Spain and Hurghada in Egypt. Flights to Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, will operate from all three Lithuanian airports.
