Lithuanian President: Russia's Nuclear Threat Letter Did Not Surprise Him

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda said he was not surprised by a letter Russia sent to NATO threatening nuclear strikes if the Kaliningrad region were threatened, noting that such reckless statements from Russia are becoming more frequent.

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has commented on reports of a letter sent by Russia to NATO, in which Moscow threatened nuclear strikes should the Kaliningrad region come under threat. According to Nausėda, the letter did not come as a surprise to him.

The Lithuanian leader stressed that reckless and careless statements from Russia have been increasing lately. He described this as a growing trend, pointing out that the volume of such rhetoric is rising.

The letter in question reportedly warns that any threat to Kaliningrad — the Russian exclave located between Lithuania and Poland — could prompt Russia to use nuclear weapons. Kaliningrad is a strategically important Russian territory in the region and is frequently referenced amid tensions between Moscow and NATO.

The Lithuanian president's remarks suggest that Baltic state leaders are increasingly confronted with this kind of rhetoric from Russia and no longer regard it as unusual. Nausėda did not disclose further details about the letter's content or NATO's response.
