‘Love Island USA’ App Surpasses 10 Million Users, Crashed During First Vote

The Love Island USA app, which lets viewers vote on contestants' fates, has topped 10 million unique users. The high engagement even caused the app to crash during the first vote of the current season.

As the eighth season of Love Island USA approaches its climax, the show's official app has emerged as this summer's biggest bombshell. Producers revealed to WIRED that the app now boasts over 10 million unique users. Since the season premiered in June, it has hit the number one spot in the iOS App Store’s Entertainment category nine times, surpassing giants like Netflix and TikTok, according to Apptopia.

The app's primary function is voting, which occurs about five times per season without prior announcement. Viewers can vote for their favorite couple, decide which dumped islanders should return, and ultimately choose the winning pair to take home $100,000. Earlier this season, the duos with the fewest votes were at risk of elimination.

Besides voting, the app features an Instagram-like feed of video clips, photo shoots, and polls, along with shopping links for official merch.

Executive producer Bernie Schaeffer emphasized the app's role in fan engagement: “More than anything, it’s reinforced for us how passionate this fan base is and how eager they are to make their voices heard. We have more people voting on the Love Island USA app than we do in many political elections taking place across the country.” Voting windows are open for only a few hours, and the show airs five times a week, requiring fans to stay glued to their screens.

Schaeffer noted that the team has a roadmap for voting moments each season but remains flexible to adapt based on drama and social media reactions. He believes direct voting provides a comprehensive snapshot of viewer sentiment, given the millions of participants from across the U.S. In a past season, the app received 1 million votes within 10 minutes of an episode ending.

While social media reactions give producers insight, direct voting empowers viewers without large online followings. “This show invites viewers to be an active participant at every turn. You can affect the storylines and outcomes onscreen, and I think as more and more people come to the show, they’ve been very enthusiastic about that interactive feature,” Schaeffer said.
