A federal agent was killed on Monday in Alexandria, Louisiana, while attempting to serve an arrest warrant for a man who had missed his court date on a sexual battery charge, according to the US Department of Justice. Clarence Frazier Jr., 48, is charged with murder in the death of Deputy US Marshal Drew Hanson. Frazier could face life imprisonment or the death penalty if convicted.

Authorities stated that Hanson was part of a joint operation involving US marshals and local sheriff's deputies. The team obtained a search warrant for Frazier's home and announced their presence upon arrival. After being unable to gain voluntary entry, they forced their way in and found Frazier barricaded in his bedroom. Frazier allegedly opened fire, striking and mortally wounding Hanson.

Frazier was arrested after a standoff; he sustained injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche said in a statement that Hanson "paid the ultimate price while protecting our communities" and his sacrifice would never be forgotten. According to the US Marshals Service roll of honor, Hanson is among more than 200 marshals, deputy marshals, and other personnel who have died in the line of duty since 1794.
