Lula da Silva elected Brazil's president for a fourth time
Brazil's incumbent president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has won the presidential runoff against Flávio Bolsonaro. The result secures him a fourth term in office.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Brazil's current president, has won the country's presidential election and secured a fourth term, The Guardian reports. In the runoff he beat Flávio Bolsonaro, and the result stands out because Lula managed to turn around a first-round defeat.
The vote count
With almost 99% of ballots counted, Lula had 51.75% support. Bolsonaro, who is 45 and the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, had 48.25%.
A rare comeback
According to the report, no Brazilian candidate had managed to overturn a first-round loss since the late 1980s. In the first round, held in early October, Lula trailed Flávio Bolsonaro by 2.2 million votes. Analysts cite higher voter turnout in key regions as the main reason for the reversal.
Lula's earlier terms
Lula, who has just turned 81, led Brazil for two terms from 2003 to 2010. He returned to power after the 2022 election, in which he defeated the then president Jair Bolsonaro, the father of his present rival.
