Free play on discrimination to be staged in Madona on 2 November

The play “Diskri… Kas?”, about prejudice and discrimination, will be performed at the Madona Municipality Cultural Centre on 2 November. Admission is free, but an invitation collected in advance is required.

The Madona Municipality Cultural Centre, at 12 Raiņa Street, will host the play “Diskri… Kas?” on 2 November. It aims to draw attention to prejudice and discrimination in everyday interactions. The performance is offered by Jānis Skutelis, an actor at the New Riga Theatre, together with “Nolaid slieksni” (“Lower the Threshold”), a campaign of Latvia’s Ministry of Welfare supported by European Union funds. Attendance is free, but visitors need an invitation obtained beforehand.

What the play is about

The organisers invite audiences to become more aware of their own thresholds of prejudice, which can slip unnoticed into conversations with other people and even close doors. The play will also address situations in which several discrimination factors overlap at once, especially age, gender and disability.

Skutelis, the author and performer of the show, notes that discrimination is a concept most people probably do not think about much in daily life. He describes the play as a first conversation that could help people understand one another better and learn about the thresholds others face but that remain unnoticed by everyone else.

How to get an invitation

The number of invitations is limited. They can be collected from the cloakroom attendant at the Madona Municipality Cultural Centre. On weekdays from Monday to Thursday they are handed out from 10:00 to 17:00, and on Fridays from 10:00 to 15:00.
