France is grappling with massive wildfires that, combined with unprecedented heatwaves, have pushed the country into what President Emmanuel Macron calls the worst crisis since World War II. Macron personally thanked firefighters for their efforts and urged them to hold on.
Firefighters are working around the clock to contain the flames, which authorities describe as unprecedented in scale. The situation is further complicated by weather conditions: meteorologists predict a new heatwave in the coming days, with temperatures along the Atlantic coast set to reach 40°C. Such conditions will significantly hamper firefighting efforts and accelerate the spread of flames.
Authorities warn that firefighters have less than a day to contain the fires before the new heatwave arrives, expected on Wednesday.
The wildfires have also affected neighboring Spain this summer. Combined, more than 360,000 people have been evacuated from both countries for safety reasons. Europe is currently experiencing one of its hottest summers on record.
