Marissa Mayer and Tech Leaders Draw Criticism for Using AI in Family Life

Former Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer has faced criticism over how she described the capabilities of her new AI app Dazzle in an interview. A TechCrunch commentary argues that tech executives' vision for AI in relationships differs from public opinion.

Marissa Mayer, the former CEO of internet company Yahoo and an early Google engineer, is facing criticism on social media over how she described her new artificial intelligence (AI) assistant, Dazzle, in an interview. The app learns from a user's camera roll. TechCrunch writer Amanda Silberling uses the episode to argue that Silicon Valley leaders' ideas about AI's role in family life and relationships may be far removed from most people's experience.

What prompted the backlash

In the interview, Mayer offered as an impressive example that the app helped her prepare three bullet points about her ten-year-old daughter for a school birthday presentation, describing the girl as empathetic, creative and an animal lover. Some commentators, including progressive activist Leah Greenberg, took the disclosure as evidence of how far Silicon Valley culture has diverged from everyone else.

After publication, Mayer wrote a long post on X explaining that she had not relied on the app to explain her child to her, but was testing what her prototype could do. The app had surfaced forgotten kindergarten projects that illustrated her daughter's creativity and care for animals.

In the same interview, Mayer said the app could also take over the mental load of choosing a theme for a child's birthday party. She said she has used it to plan a playdate for her daughter, arrange family activities on vacation and pick a Halloween costume. She also suggested her AI assistant could coordinate plans with her husband's assistant. Asked whether such an AI-planned future is depressing, Mayer replied that she hadn't really thought that through.

Wider context

The author notes that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman voiced similar ideas, saying on television last year that he could not imagine raising a newborn without ChatGPT. A few months ago he also suggested on X creating a podcast about children's upcoming birthdays and interests.

According to a Pew Research Center study, 50% of U.S. adults think AI will reduce people's ability to form meaningful relationships, while only 5% say it will make that easier. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on a podcast last year that it will become more socially acceptable to hand emotional needs to AI therapists or even AI romantic partners.
