Marita Stēnbergena breaks world record in 100m freestyle
Dutch swimmer Marita Stēnbergena set a new world record in the 100m freestyle at the Sette Colli International Trophy in Rome on Saturday, finishing in 51.68 seconds.

On Saturday, at the swimming competition known as the Sette Colli International Trophy, which took place in Rome, 26-year-old Dutch athlete Marita Stēnbergena competed in the 100-meter freestyle event. She achieved a time of 51.68 seconds, a new world record. This time is 0.03 seconds faster than the previous world record of 51.71 seconds, which had been set by Sweden's Sarah Sjöström in 2017. The second-place finisher was Siobhan Haughey of Hong Kong, who touched the wall in 52.52 seconds, meaning Stēnbergena was 0.84 seconds ahead. Third place went to Italy's Sarah Curtis with a time of 52.69 seconds. Marita Stēnbergena is a two-time world champion in the 100-meter freestyle and is the only woman to have swum the distance in under 52 seconds on more than one occasion.
