French football club Marseille suffered a second consecutive defeat in the UEFA Europa League, Europe's second-tier club competition, on Thursday. The side lost 1-0 to Greek club Olympiakos. Marseille have now lost both of their opening matches in the tournament, and their form is worsening: they have lost six of their last seven games in all competitions.
Other French clubs
Lyon went in the opposite direction, beating Premier League side Crystal Palace of England. Rennes, meanwhile, claimed their first Europa League victory of the season, edging Greek club OFI Crete 2-1.
Other Thursday results
In Italy's representation, Juventus won thanks to Randal Kolo Muani, who scored in stoppage time. AC Milan, also from Italy, cruised to a 4-0 win over Austria's Salzburg.
News from FIFA
Separately, Gianni Infantino, president of world football's governing body FIFA, apologised to the FIFA Council over his controversial proposal to open the World Cup to private investors. The idea has since been abandoned, France 24 reports.
