Hundreds gather in Marseille's Old Port to protest racism after deadly shooting near Paris
Hundreds of people rallied against racism in the French city of Marseille on Monday evening. The protest followed a shooting in Trappes and La Verrière near Paris, which prosecutors are investigating as a suspected racist terrorist attack.

Hundreds of people gathered at the Vieux-Port, or Old Port, in the southern French city of Marseille on Monday evening to protest against racism. The demonstration came three days after a shooting in a suburb south-west of Paris that left one person dead and five injured.
Size of the crowd
Police estimated the turnout at 800, while organisers said more than 1,000 people took part. The rally was called by an anti-racism coalition, trade unions and local groups. Protesters carried placards condemning racial hatred.
The shooting near Paris
Three days earlier, a gunman opened fire on passers-by in Trappes and neighbouring La Verrière, south-west of Paris. The victim who died was 26-year-old amateur mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Pengo Bossio Wangi. Five other people were wounded, among them a 12-year-old girl who was shot while walking to a swimming pool. She remains in critical condition.
Prosecutors are treating the shootings as a suspected racist terrorist attack. The 39-year-old suspect was arrested shortly afterwards in Coignières.
The source does not provide further details about the investigation or the suspect's motives.
