Elon Musk, the billionaire head of several technology companies, has given at least $276 million to groups backing the US Republican Party since July. According to The New York Times, this makes him both the party's biggest known donor and the largest established donor in the current midterm campaign. Midterm elections are held between presidential contests and decide the makeup of the US Senate and House of Representatives.

Where the money went

The largest share, $158 million, went to the Senate Leadership Fund. This is the main super PAC, a political committee allowed to raise and spend unlimited sums, working to secure a Republican Senate majority. The contribution is among the largest political donations in American history. Among other races, the fund is fighting to keep the party's Senate seat in Texas, a major hub for Musk's business empire.

More than $76 million went to America PAC, a super PAC Musk founded in 2024 that canvasses hard-to-reach Republican voters.

Smaller amounts have gone to other conservative organizations:

  • $20 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, a super PAC supporting House Republicans;
  • $10 million to Lone Star Liberty PAC, which backs Ken Paxton's bid for a Senate seat in Texas;
  • $10 million to the Republican Governors Association;
  • $2 million to the Republican Attorneys General Association.

Compared with earlier spending

In total, Musk has given roughly $366 million to federal committees over the 2025–26 election cycle. That is significantly more than the $290 million he spent in 2024 to help Donald Trump return to the presidency, when he pledged to spend around $45 million a month.

Last May, Musk also said he would do far less political spending in the future. So far, he has not kept that promise.
