Medical workers' union voices no confidence in health minister ahead of elections

Just weeks before parliamentary elections, Latvia's health and social care workers' union has called for the removal of Health Minister Hosams Abu Meri, though he survived a confidence vote. Union leader Līga Bāriņa discusses the sector's problems in a broadcast interview.

Latvia's Union of Health and Social Care Workers has publicly declared no confidence in Health Minister Hosams Abu Meri just weeks before parliamentary elections, demanding his replacement. Observers note this is an unusual situation, as it is rare for a minister to face a confidence vote in parliament merely a month before elections.

A similar situation affected Education Minister Ilze Indriksone, who also had to face a confidence vote around the same time. In both cases, the opposition lacked enough votes to remove the ministers, and both Abu Meri and Indriksone have retained their positions for the remaining weeks before the election.

Discussing problems in the health sector

In the broadcast "Jauns jautājums," hosted by journalist Sandris Metuzāls, union leader Līga Bāriņa appeared as a guest to discuss the problems facing the healthcare system. The conversation examines whether a lack of funding is truly the sector's main and only challenge, or whether the root causes lie elsewhere — in management, organization, or the overall functioning of the system.

The union's move to express no confidence in the minister reflects heightened tension between healthcare workers and political leadership at a critical pre-election moment, when healthcare issues could become a key topic in the election campaign.
