Coalition talks begin in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern without the AfD

Three parties in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, a state in north-eastern Germany, opened formal talks on forming a government on Monday. The far-right AfD, which won the regional election, is not part of the talks.

Germany's Social Democratic Party (SPD), the Left (Die Linke) and the Greens began official negotiations on Monday, 12 October, on forming a three-party coalition government in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, a federal state in the north-east of the country.

The talks come almost three weeks after the regional election, which was won by the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD). The AfD is not taking part in the negotiations, and the government is to be formed without it.

The source does not say what is on the agenda, how long the talks are expected to last or how posts would be divided among the parties.
