A 45-year-old woman has died in the German state of Lower Saxony after the electric car she was driving, a Volkswagen ID.7, veered off the road, struck a tree and burst into flames. The incident was reported by the German newspaper Bild.

What happened

The crash took place on Sunday morning at around 8:20. The reason the car left the road has not yet been established. After the collision with the tree the vehicle caught fire, and the driver was trapped inside. She died at the scene.

Tobias Nadjib, a spokesman for the local fire service, told the paper that rescuers had no chance of freeing the woman from the vehicle in time. Police have opened an investigation to determine the exact causes of the crash.

Similar cases elsewhere

The report notes that several comparable fatal incidents have been recorded worldwide, in which electric cars caught fire after a crash and the people trapped inside could not open the doors. Last year in China, a man died after a Xiaomi SU7 caught fire following a collision. In Germany, a man and two children died in a Tesla that they could not escape because the doors would not open. In California, in the United States, a 19-year-old woman died in a burning Tesla Cybertruck.

The causes of this latest crash are still being determined.
