Meta launches Muse Image AI model that can pull Instagram users into photos

Meta announced on Tuesday the launch of Muse Image, a new AI model developed by its Superintelligence Labs division. The model is already integrated into the Meta AI app, Instagram, and WhatsApp, and will soon be available on Facebook and Messenger. Muse Image is part of the Muse family of AI models, which are replacing the previous Llama lineup.

Alexandr Wang, who Meta hired last year to lead Superintelligence Labs, said on Threads that Muse Image is “agentic,” meaning it works with the Muse Spark large language model to reason through prompts, search the web, and plan before generating images. Meta also plans to launch a Muse Video model, which Wang teased as being “competitive on prompt adherence, visual fidelity, temporal consistency.”

A notable feature of Muse Image is the ability to @ mention other Instagram accounts in prompts, allowing the model to use their public photos to generate new visuals. Meta notes that users can control how others reuse their content for AI. Additionally, the model can transform images based on suggested prompts, create designs for invitations and postcards, redesign rooms using images from Facebook Marketplace, and let users draw directly on photos.

Muse Image will power 30 new AI effects for Instagram Stories, rolling out first in the US before expanding to other countries and other areas of Meta’s apps.
