Meta Plans to Bring Privacy-Focused Data Processing to Its Smart Glasses

At its annual Meta Connect event in Menlo Park, Meta announced it intends to bring its Private Processing technology to the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. The system is designed to isolate AI data processing so that no outside party — including Meta itself — can access a user's information.

The technology was first introduced last year for WhatsApp and the Meta AI app, where it enabled a feature called Incognito Chat, allowing users to interact with an AI assistant without compromising WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption. Applied to the glasses, Private Processing could theoretically protect chat interactions with Meta's AI assistant, including private transcriptions and voice commands, though the company has not specified which exact features will be supported.

No concrete timeline yet

Speaking with WIRED, Meta's director of engineering, Pritam Shah, said the underlying platform is already built and functional. He explained that the announcement is being made now so Meta can begin collaborating with the security and privacy communities, as well as third-party auditors, before rolling out further features on top of it. No release date for the glasses has been set.

The announcement arrives as Meta continues to face scrutiny over user privacy. This year alone, the company has dealt with controversy over its facial recognition technology and concerns that its smart glasses could be misused, including by sexual predators — some critics have nicknamed them "pervert glasses," and apps have even been built to detect nearby Meta glasses.

Meta also pointed to its Muse AI agent, which runs on a secure cloud environment called Secure VM, with an upcoming Confidential VM version promising similarly strict data protections. Muse is also set to be integrated into Meta's smart glasses.
