Cases of a diarrhea-causing intestinal parasite have exploded in Michigan over the last two weeks, with the state reporting over 700 cases and 36 hospitalizations as of July 6. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHSS) told Ars Technica that cases rose dramatically from 170 on June 30 to 572 on July 4, and have now exceeded 700.

The outbreak is caused by the microscopic, single-celled parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, which leads to cyclosporiasis. While generally not life-threatening, the infection typically causes watery diarrhea with frequent and sometimes explosive bowel movements, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Symptoms usually last about a week but can persist for two weeks or longer, with dehydration being a primary concern.

The parasite is shed in feces and spreads via contaminated produce or water. Thorough washing of fruits and vegetables and proper hand hygiene are key prevention methods. MDHSS noted that previous outbreaks have been linked to bagged salad mixes, cilantro, basil, raspberries, snow peas, and green onions.

At this time, no specific produce grower, supplier, or type of produce has been identified as the source. A large investigation is underway, involving local health departments in southeastern Michigan, where most cases have been reported. Officials are interviewing patients, sharing information, and working to identify common exposures. MDHSS is also coordinating with the CDC and has shared case data with the agency.
