Microsoft Reportedly Coaches Sales Team to Talk Down OpenAI and Anthropic

Microsoft is training its sales team to negatively compare AI products from competitors like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, emphasizing the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of its own models, according to a Bloomberg report.

Microsoft appears to be gearing up for more aggressive competition in the AI space by coaching its salesforce to disparage rival products. An internal meeting on Tuesday, described as a strategy session for the new fiscal year, saw executives outline a plan for salespeople to highlight the superiority of Microsoft's in-house models over those from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, Bloomberg reported. Executive Vice President Jay Parikh reportedly told the room: “Everyone else is selling parts — we’re selling the full end-to-end system. That’s the story that we all need to get out there and tell in FY27.” Another executive, Jacob Andreou, gave a presentation directly comparing Microsoft's Copilot to Anthropic's Claude chatbot, claiming that within Microsoft's office apps, Anthropic's model was “slower and less accurate, and lacked the proper security integrations.”

While it is not surprising that a company would train its sales team to trash-talk competitors, what stands out is that Microsoft is now targeting the very companies it once relied on for AI models powering its own products. This is the latest such move. A report earlier this month revealed that Microsoft has been swapping out OpenAI and Anthropic models from flagship apps like Word and Excel in favor of its own—a cost-cutting measure. Previously, Microsoft and OpenAI had a unique agreement where Microsoft provided capital and computing power in exchange for exclusive access to OpenAI's API and models. That partnership was amended in April, removing the exclusivity clause and allowing OpenAI to sell to Microsoft's rivals. This revised relationship may explain the new sales pitch.

Microsoft has faced investor scrutiny over its massive AI spending, with its stock outlook weakening. By talking up the competitiveness of its own products, the company likely aims to calm investors and build confidence in its long-term AI strategy. TechCrunch has reached out to Microsoft and Anthropic for comment.
