Microsoft Launches Cheaper Surface Pro and Surface Laptop with 8GB RAM
Microsoft has introduced new, more affordable versions of its 12-inch Surface Pro and 13-inch Surface Laptop, reducing the RAM from 16GB to 8GB. The devices are priced at $849 and $949 respectively, but lack support for Copilot Plus AI features due to the memory cut.

Microsoft has announced new entry-level configurations for its Surface Pro and Surface Laptop lines. The 12-inch Surface Pro is now available starting at $849, while the 13-inch Surface Laptop starts at $949. Both models come with 8GB of RAM, half of what was previously offered in the base models.
When the devices originally launched in 2025, the base configurations featured 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, priced at $799 for the Surface Pro and $899 for the Surface Laptop. However, in April 2026, Microsoft increased prices significantly, bringing the cost to $1,049 and $1,199 respectively. The new cheaper models bring the starting price back down, but with reduced memory.
Aside from the RAM reduction, the new Surface devices retain the same specs as their higher-priced counterparts. They are powered by an 8-core Snapdragon X Plus processor and include 256GB of storage. However, because Copilot Plus, Microsoft's built-in artificial intelligence features, requires at least 16GB of RAM, these devices will not support it.
Even with the lower price, the 8GB Surface models are still more expensive than Apple's MacBook Neo, which starts at $599. The MacBook Neo has been noted for its performance and affordability, disrupting the laptop market.
