Tributes poured in from world leaders after the death of US Senator Lindsey Graham at age 71 on Saturday, but his political legacy is deeply controversial and often bloody.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Graham a "great friend of Israel," while Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described him as a "true defender of freedom." However, the senator was a leading neoconservative hawk who advocated for muscular US military intervention abroad.

Graham was a vocal supporter of the 2003 Iraq War, claiming Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction — a claim that proved false after hundreds of thousands of deaths. He later pushed for preemptive military action against Iran, opposing the Obama nuclear deal and successfully urging President Trump to strike Iranian nuclear sites and ultimately go to war in February 2026.

Despite his hawkishness, Graham became a close ally and golf partner of Trump, often acting as a "Trump whisperer" who could influence the president's foreign policy decisions. His death may remove a key check on Trump's impulses, especially regarding relations with dictators like Vladimir Putin.

Graham was a staunch supporter of Ukraine, visiting Kyiv for the 10th time days before his death and securing a sanctions package against Russia. He also backed Israel's war in Gaza after the October 7 attack, drawing anger across the Middle East. Iranian state television announced his death with hostile words, saying he "went to hell."

NATO allies, Taiwan, and Germany also paid tribute, highlighting Graham's global reach. Yet his unyielding support for military intervention and his loyalty to Trump left a complicated legacy that continues to divide opinion.
