US Senator Lindsey Graham, a senior Republican, has died at the age of 71 due to a sudden illness, his press office announced on Sunday, July 12. The statement said Graham passed away on Saturday evening after a rapidly developing disease. According to NBC News, emergency services were called to the senator's home the same evening on a report of cardiac arrest.
Graham was first elected to the US Senate in 2003 and was one of the closest political allies of President Donald Trump. He chaired the Senate Budget Committee and had intended to run for a fifth six-year term in November. The senator was among the most vocal supporters of Ukraine in the US Congress and actively advocated for tougher sanctions against Russia. Shortly before his death, he again called for increased pressure on Moscow.
Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna (Eesti 200) expressed condolences over the death of the senator. "Estonia will remember him as a reliable friend, a determined supporter of NATO's eastern flank, and an unwavering defender of Ukraine," Tsahkna wrote on social media. Condolences were also extended to the senator's family, friends, colleagues, and the American people.
