Mississippi Teen's Death Remains Unexplained as Family Demands Transparency
Two weeks after Nolan Wells was found dead on Horn Island, his family continues to press for answers, raising concerns about potential racial bias in the investigation.

What Happened?
Nolan Xavier Wells, 18, went on a boat trip with friends to Horn Island, Mississippi, on July 4. He was scheduled to begin college football camp the following Monday. While his friends, phone, and keys returned that day, he did not. His body was discovered on the island on July 6 after a national search.
Family's Concerns
Christine Wonsley, Nolan's mother, posted a plea for information on Facebook that went viral. Social media users noted that Nolan was Black while his three friends were White, suggesting racial motives. At a press conference in New York, Wonsley, alongside attorney Ben Crump, said she had always talked to her son about how to navigate spaces as a Black person. Crump argued that the investigation would be different if the roles were reversed.
Ashlee Cole, the mother of one of the friends and a county judge, denied hindering the investigation and claimed Nolan left the island with a separate group. Another friend said Nolan met a woman and wanted to stay; but Crump said the woman later stated Nolan decided to return with his friends.
Investigation Details
Crump revealed that using the Life360 app, Nolan's phone was tracked to the home of one of the boat's occupants. When retrieved, messages had been deleted. Nolan's keys were found at the home of one of the men in the photo. Sheriff John Ledbetter stated before the autopsy was complete that "no foul play was suspected," a comment Crump called premature.
A state autopsy has been completed but results are pending. An independent autopsy, funded by Colin Kaepernick, was conducted after the body was flown to Washington DC.
Calls for Transparency
The Congressional Black Caucus demanded a full, transparent, independent investigation. Funeral services for Nolan will be held on Monday, paid for by filmmaker Tyler Perry.
