Wired has published a detailed review of the most popular mushroom coffees, evaluating their taste, effects, and overall experience. Several products were tested, each receiving a numerical score.

Best Products

The best additive for coffee was Om Master Blend Organic Mushroom Powder, scoring 5.9 out of 10. It is not drinkable on its own but when added to coffee it smooths out acidity and reduces jitters. Ingredients include lion’s mane, shiitake, turkey tail, himematsutake, antrodia, maitake, king trumpet, cordyceps, and reishi, with zero caffeine.

Everyday Dose Mushroom Coffee Starter Kit with 5.1 points is described as reminiscent of a wellness influencer pyramid scheme. It has 45 mg of caffeine and a subscription model that is hard to cancel. The taste is likened to Chex Mix and bong water, but becomes drinkable with oat milk and syrup; the reviewer also notes digestive effects.

Other Tested Products

Lifeboost Mindflow ($40) was noted for its unassuming yet pleasant taste and moderate energy boost. Four Sigmatic Organic Coffee ($20) stands out for a dark roast without ashy aftertaste, and it boosted productivity. North Spore Functional-5 Mushroom Coffee ($18) is a ground coffee blend with a earthy flavor that could pass for regular coffee. Ryze Superfoods Mushroom Coffee ($65) is criticized for bland flavor and lack of positive effects. Cuppa ($30) is described as pleasant and light, with a mild energy boost.

Not Recommended

MUD/WTR Original Blend ($51) received a negative review. Its flavor is spicy and complex, emulsification is difficult, and the bottom of the cup contains undrinkable sludge. The effect is more placebo-like, and it is recommended only as an occasional treat.
