Laimons Ezergailis, a 102-year-old legionnaire and public figure from Dobele, has passed away
On July 22, Laimons Ezergailis, a Latvian legionnaire and community activist from Dobele, died at the age of 102. He was one of the last surviving Latvian Legion soldiers and had received the Dobele Municipality's 'Honorary Badge'.
According to Dobele Municipality, Laimons Ezergailis passed away on July 22, 2026, at the age of 102. Born on November 18, 1923, in Dzērbene parish, he moved to Dobele in the 1950s and made it his home.
Ezergailis was actively involved in the city's public life for many years, leading the Dobele Incubation Station for 13 years and participating in a local hunters' group. During World War II, he served in the 319th Police Battalion, fought in battles near Bauska, and was wounded. After the war, he was placed in a filtration camp in Georgia.
Throughout his life, he maintained ties with the legionary organization 'Daugavas Vanagi' and honored fallen soldiers. On his 100th birthday in November 2023, he was awarded the Dobele Municipality's 'Honorary Badge' for his contributions to the community. The celebration took place at the 'Zinta' concert hall, where local residents paid tribute to him.
