Salaries for top Latvian officials may rise next year

Latvia's State Chancellery says salaries for top state officials, including ministers and MPs, could increase next year, after base pay was frozen in 2026 at 2025 levels.

Latvia's State Chancellery has announced that ministers' monthly salaries could reach 8,107 euros before tax next year, while members of the Saeima (parliament) could earn 4,576 euros gross per month.

The increase would also apply to the country's top offices – the President, the Speaker of the Saeima, and the Prime Minister. These officials currently earn 8,659 euros a month before tax, but next year that figure could rise by 494 euros, to 9,153 euros.

How salaries are set

Under the Law on Remuneration of Officials and Employees of State and Local Government Institutions, the State Chancellery is required to publish the base monthly salary for the following year on its website by May 1 each year. However, the final figure can be adjusted during the annual state budget process, where lawmakers may limit or fully freeze the increase.

For example, the 2025 budget law capped the base salary indexation coefficient at 2.6%, even though the standard calculation formula would have produced a larger increase. When preparing the 2026 budget, lawmakers went further and decided not to raise base salaries at all, setting the indexation coefficient at 0%. As a result, base salaries for officials in 2026 remained unchanged from 2025 levels.

It remains unclear whether the planned increase for 2027 will be approved in full, as that will depend on decisions made during next year's state budget preparations.
