NATO Integrates Palantir AI System to Track Russian Troops

NATO has integrated the Maven Smart System (MSS), an artificial intelligence platform developed by US-based Palantir, into its headquarters in Belgium. According to The Times, the system is designed for round-the-clock monitoring of Russian troop movements and planning military operations.

MSS is a flagship AI-powered command and control platform. It aggregates, structures, and visualizes vast amounts of intelligence data in real time, including drone footage, satellite imagery, radar data, and intercepted communications. The system uses computer vision to automatically detect potential targets or enemy force movements, highlighting them on operators' screens. Additionally, the AI suggests optimal courses of action for military commanders by automatically assessing nearby NATO assets, time to target, and required fuel, reducing decision-making from hours to minutes.

The platform significantly optimizes human resources: previously, similar analytical work required about 2,000 specialists; now a group of 20 operators can handle it. Maven will display force deployments across the entire eastern flank and provide detailed information on Russian troop movements. If Russia moves elite airborne units closer to the Baltic states' borders, the system will detect it and raise an alarm.

Palantir UK CEO Louis Mosley stated that in the event of war, NATO would plan operations and strike targets using Palantir. "If you walked into the SHAPE operations center today, you would see Palantir on every screen," Mosley claimed.

On June 30, NATO announced the system had achieved full operational capability, but the press release did not mention Palantir by name. Several member states, including France and Germany, have expressed concerns over excessive reliance on a US company historically linked to the CIA. In contrast, the UK, Sweden, and the Netherlands support the system's implementation. Palantir is also bidding in a tender to replace NATO's air defense software, which would enable joint tracking of ballistic and hypersonic missiles.

The Project Maven military program was launched by the Pentagon in 2017, initially partnering with Google. Google withdrew in 2018 following internal employee protests against using AI for military purposes, after which Palantir took over development. The platform was successfully used by US forces in the Middle East and the Red Sea. Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the US has used Maven to provide Ukrainian forces with detailed coordinates of Russian equipment and positions.

Palantir's activities have been accompanied by several controversies. US Immigration and Customs Enforcement used its software to locate and deport foreigners; the UK is reviewing a Palantir contract with the National Health Service (NHS) over concerns about patient data leaks; and the company has denied allegations that its technology was used by the Israeli army to strike civilian targets in Gaza.
