NATO Reclassifies Baltic Air Policing Mission as Air Defence Mission
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda announced at the NATO summit in Ankara that the alliance is reclassifying its air policing mission in the Baltic states into an air defence mission, significantly improving Lithuania’s air defence capabilities.

NATO is transforming its long-standing air policing mission in the Baltic states into a full-fledged air defence mission, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda announced on Wednesday from the alliance’s summit in Ankara. "One of the fundamental outcomes of this summit is the reclassification of NATO’s air policing mission into a NATO air defence mission. This will substantially improve Lithuania’s air defence capabilities," Nausėda said. The previous air policing mission, which has been in place since the Baltic states joined NATO in 2004, involved rotating allied aircraft to patrol the region's airspace. The shift to an air defence mission expands this role to include more active defence measures, such as the ability to intercept and neutralize airborne threats. This change reflects NATO’s increasing focus on regional security amid ongoing challenges from the east. The decision was made during the NATO summit held in Ankara, Turkey. The new mission is expected to involve enhanced coordination among allies and additional resources to ensure robust air defence for the Baltic region.
