Russia's independent Novaya Gazeta being evicted from its Moscow newsroom
Russia's independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta must leave its office in central Moscow by November 9, after 29 years there. The paper has not yet found a new space.
Novaya Gazeta, one of Russia's independent newspapers, is being evicted from its office on Potapovsky Lane in central Moscow, where its newsroom has operated for 29 years. The news outlet Ekho reported this, citing a letter to readers from editor-in-chief Sergey Sokolov and journalist Irina Gordiyenko. The move means the paper loses its long-time base and the Anna Politkovskaya museum housed there.
"They're simply throwing us out, giving us barely any time to pack up. The Anna Politkovskaya museum is closing, and portraits of our friends who were killed are being taken down from the walls," Sokolov and Gordiyenko wrote.
Deadline and search for a new space
Sources close to the newspaper told Ekho that staff must vacate the office by November 9. The newsroom has not yet found new premises.
Earlier restrictions
Novaya Gazeta stopped publishing its print edition in 2022, after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. In the same year, Moscow's Basmanny Court revoked the outlet's media license.
More recently, in September 2026, the newspaper was designated a "foreign agent", a status in Russia that subjects organizations and individuals to additional state restrictions and oversight.
