The week in pictures: protests in France, wildfires in Indonesia and Brazil's election campaign
France 24 has compiled the week's most striking photos: cost-of-living protests in France, peatland fires in Indonesia, a Russian missile strike on Kyiv and a fire at the Eagle's Nest in Bavaria.
The French news channel France 24 published a photo roundup of the week's events on Sunday, 25 October. It features images from student protests in France, the presidential election race in Brazil and peatland fires in Indonesia.
Protests in France
On 24 October, trade unions organised a demonstration in Paris as part of nationwide protests against the cost of living and rising fuel prices. The protests were called by the "Yellow Vests" movement and were joined by high school and university students. One photograph shows demonstrators dressed as Stormtroopers from the Star Wars films. A day after earlier nationwide cost-of-living protests, on 18 October, customers sat on a cafe terrace in Marseille on a street covered in debris.
Brazil
In Brazil's presidential election, the leftist incumbent, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, faces right-wing challenger Flavio Bolsonaro. On 19 October in Sao Paulo, Lula's supporters held masks depicting Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg with red horns during a demonstration in front of the company's headquarters.
Indonesia, Ukraine and the Middle East
On 22 October in Palangkaraya, in Indonesia's Central Kalimantan province, a man used a tree branch to try to put out a peatland fire. On 21 October in Kyiv, residents looked at a crater in a residential neighbourhood after a Russian missile strike. In Tel Aviv on 19 October, a worker hung an election campaign billboard for the Democrats party showing its leader, Yair Golan, next to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Bavaria and Albania
On 24 October a fire broke out at the building known as the Eagle's Nest, built for Adolf Hitler in the Bavarian Alps. The image was distributed by "Bergerlebnis Berchtesgaden". The same day in Tirana, the capital of Albania, a water cannon was used against a protester at an anti-government demonstration held by students.
