Wildfires across Europe
On July 30, a wildfire raged near the village of Asomatos on the Greek island of Crete. Two firefighters lost their lives while battling the blaze. In southwestern France, near the town of Ares, firefighters worked to control a fire in a field on July 28.
Earthquake in Japan
A powerful earthquake struck southwestern Japan on July 28, killing 34 people. Among the victims were several who died when the Aeon Mall Kumamoto shopping centre collapsed in Kashima, Kumamoto Prefecture.
Ancient mammoth remains in Bulgaria
Record-low water levels on the Danube River exposed parts of the riverbed near the village of Ryahovo in Bulgaria, revealing the remains of an ancient mammoth. Specialists have so far identified a jaw bone, tusk fragments, part of a shoulder blade, and a femur. Woolly mammoths co-existed with early humans, who hunted them for food and used their tusks and bones as tools.
Migrant influx at Ceuta
Tens of thousands of migrants attempted to cross into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco. On July 31, clashes broke out with Moroccan security forces near the town of Fnideq on the Morocco-Spain border. Eventually, the migrants returned home.

Smoke rose over the centre of Kyiv after a Russian missile attack on August 1. Meanwhile, former French international footballer Zinedine Zidane was presented as the new head coach of France's national team at a press conference on July 28.
