Illegal Migrant Who Crossed Border Hopes for Asylum in Latvia

A migrant, referred to as Ahmed (name changed), is currently hospitalized in Daugavpils after illegally crossing the Belarus-Latvia border near the city a month ago. He traveled over 5,000 kilometers to reach Latvia, where he hopes to be granted asylum. Following his detention, he was placed in the asylum seekers' reception center in Mucenieki, but developed an intestinal infection there and was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

In the hospital, Ahmed refuses to eat pork due to his Islamic faith. He asked a fellow patient for a cottage cheese snack while the hospital's vegetable stew with pork remained untouched. Ahmed's story highlights the realities of illegal immigration – individuals risking their health and lives by traveling thousands of kilometers, hoping for safety and a better future in the European Union.
