In an interview with LSM, geologist Konstantin Ranks explained that the destructive flow did not occur suddenly or in isolation. Instead, it resulted from a chain of natural processes that unfolded simultaneously or in close succession in the mountain terrain. According to the geologist, it was precisely the combination of these processes that led to such severe and widespread consequences.
Ranks also noted that stopping a flow as powerful as the one that formed in Nepal would practically require a giant earthen dam — meaning that no other type of protective structure could withstand the pressure and volume generated by a natural event of this scale.
The incident once again highlights how vulnerable mountainous regions are to complex geological and climatic processes, whose interaction can trigger sudden, difficult-to-control natural disasters that endanger the lives and safety of local residents.
