Two men died in a road accident near Iecava, Latvia, over the past weekend. A yellow Volkswagen hit a tree on private property, killing both the driver and the passenger, according to the programme "Degpunktā".

State Police spokeswoman Rūta Strautniece said the dead are the driver, a man born in 1980, and the passenger, a man born in 1998.

How the scene was discovered

The owner of the property said a neighbour had told him about a loud bang coming from the direction of his home. When he arrived, he found a wrecked car, a damaged fence and the dead.

Possible causes

Several factors shaped the crash: the vehicle was improperly equipped, the permitted speed limit was exceeded, and the road surface was gravel.

Inspection of the car's interior shows that it had a place for only one person. The second occupant was either sitting on an unfastened raised platform or was in the luggage compartment.

According to the information currently available, the driver also had not fastened his seat belt.
