Nick Kyrgios provisionally suspended after testing positive for cocaine
Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has been provisionally suspended from competition after testing positive for cocaine; he says he is making no excuses but admits to struggling in the twilight of his career.
Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has been provisionally suspended from professional competition after a doping sample returned a positive result for cocaine. The suspension was announced publicly, and the player has already issued his first response to the news.
"No excuses," says Kyrgios
Commenting on the situation, Kyrgios said he was not making excuses for what happened and was taking responsibility for it. At the same time, he acknowledged that he has recently been struggling with difficulties tied to what he described as the twilight of his playing career — a period he suggested carries its own added pressures.
What a provisional suspension means
A provisional suspension is typically applied by anti-doping authorities while an investigation into a possible violation is under way. It means the athlete cannot compete in official events until a final decision is reached. Such a status does not by itself determine the outcome — the process can end either in sanctions or in the suspension being lifted if mitigating circumstances are found.
It remains unclear when a final ruling in Kyrgios's case will be issued or what consequences it may ultimately have for his professional tennis career. Until then, he is barred from taking part in competitive events.
