The Netherlands Ministry of Defence published its annual defence policy strategy document on Monday, expressing concern about potential Russian aggression against NATO. According to intelligence assessments, Russia is preparing for a long-term confrontation with Europe. In the worst-case scenario, a limited military conflict with a NATO member state could occur as soon as one year after hostilities in Ukraine end.

Similar warnings have been issued by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who stated that Russia could be ready to use military force against the alliance within five years. These threats have prompted the Netherlands to reassess its defence policy and increase investments, with a particular focus on unmanned technology.

The ministry has set a goal that within five years, half of the Dutch armed forces' operational capabilities will be unmanned. To achieve this, the Dutch government plans to establish a specialized laboratory where unmanned aerial vehicles, including counter-drone systems, will be designed and built.

Defence Minister Dilan Yeşilgöz has emphasized that Europe and the Netherlands face the question of whether they can become strong enough quickly enough to protect their freedom, security, and way of life. She noted that this is the responsibility of every generation, but rarely has it been so urgent.
