Latvia's State Police will implement mandatory document checks for everyone visiting the Russian Embassy in Riga as of July 1. The measure was announced by Foreign Minister Baiba Braže (New Unity) during a government meeting on Tuesday, where she temporarily served as acting Defense Minister.

Under the new protocol, all embassy visitors will be required to present identification documents before being allowed access to the diplomatic premises. Further details on the procedure and specific documents required have not yet been disclosed, but the announcement signals heightened security controls around the Russian diplomatic mission.

The decision comes amid strained relations between Latvia and Russia. Braže, who heads the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, raised the issue at the cabinet meeting, emphasizing the need for stricter security measures around foreign diplomatic facilities. More information on how the checks will be conducted in practice is expected in the coming days.
