From Saw Accident to World Silver: Edijs Sīmanis' Remarkable Journey
Latvian para-athlete Edijs Sīmanis overcame a severe workplace injury to win the HYROX world vice-champion title in Stockholm.

Edijs Sīmanis, a 34-year-old Latvian para-athlete, has become the HYROX world vice-champion in the class for athletes with upper limb functional impairments at the championship in Stockholm, Sweden. His finishing time was one hour, five minutes, and 20 seconds (01:05:20). Behind this achievement lies a 15-year struggle with physical pain, self-destruction, doctors' verdicts, and iron self-discipline.
The story began 19 years ago, when 15-year-old Edijs from Talsi started his first summer job. On the first day, he was assigned to a circular saw after a colleague had to leave. After a brief instruction, he began cutting boards. Suddenly, a board fell, pulling his left hand into the saw. His hand was shattered – the wrist was destroyed, fingers scattered, and part of the hand was hanging only by a blood vessel.
Doctors told him not to run, but Edijs did not give up. As a child, he was hyperactive and determined – he trained in karate and wanted to be first in every sport. The injury did not break his spirit. He now believes that circumstances do not determine one's future; rather, it is the choices one makes.
