A new maths teacher, Rūta Barovska, who comes from the Jēkabpils area, has started work this school year at Aizkraukle Municipality Secondary School in Latvia. She has changed careers: until now she worked in retail management, while her days are now filled with maths lessons and pupils' questions. The local newspaper Staburags tells her story, which shows that an adult can begin a professional path anew.

From a company to a school

Before turning to teaching, Barovska was a sales manager at a company that had started operating in a new sector and wanted to develop it. She began her path in education with the support of the programme "Iespējamā misija".

An idea that was not new

Working with children was not unfamiliar to her. The teacher says the choice was one she had considered long ago, when she studied child care in London. In her words, circumstances have now simply fallen into place, and the decision has become reality.

What it means to be a teacher

The article asks what prompted her to change profession, what the new teacher's daily routine looks like and what being a teacher actually involves. One feature of the job it mentions is that teachers must make many decisions on their own. The publication describes a change of profession as a step that takes courage, determination and belief in one's own abilities.

The part of the article available publicly does not describe in detail how the transition to school went or what challenges the teacher has faced in her first months.
