McLaren's Lando Norris has been given a ten-place grid penalty for this weekend's Belgian Grand Prix due to a battery replacement that exceeds the season's permitted component allowance. The team hopes that the overtaking-friendly Spa-Francorchamps circuit will mitigate the impact.
Norris missed the Chinese Grand Prix due to engine problems and faced difficulties in Japan and Monaco earlier this season. According to regulations, using more than the allowed number of engine components results in a grid penalty for the first race where the extra part is used.
After nine rounds, championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) has 179 points, while Norris sits fifth with 97 points. In the constructors' standings, Mercedes leads with 333 points, followed by Ferrari (255) and McLaren (179).
The Belgian Grand Prix takes place this weekend. The original 24-race calendar was reduced after the Bahrain and Saudi Arabia rounds were canceled due to conflict in the Middle East. The season concludes in Abu Dhabi in early December.
