Latvia's 'Signal Elections 2026' mock vote concludes, over 44,000 students took part
Latvia has wrapped up its 'Signal Elections 2026' civic education initiative, with 215 schools and more than 44,000 eligible young voters participating. Vidzeme and Latgale saw the highest turnout.
Latvia has concluded 'Signal Elections 2026,' an initiative designed to help young people better understand democratic principles and how elections work in practice. The project was organized by the association 'Eiropas Kustība Latvijā' (European Movement Latvia), which announced the results.
Wide participation
A total of 215 educational institutions across Latvia took part in this year's mock elections. The overall number of eligible young voters exceeded 44,000, reflecting broad involvement from schools and other learning institutions nationwide.
Vidzeme and Latgale lead turnout
Young voters in the Vidzeme and Latgale regions were the most active participants, showing higher engagement than students in other parts of the country.
Only two municipalities absent
Of all Latvian municipalities, only two did not take part in the initiative: Ventspils municipality and Gulbene municipality. Educational institutions in every other part of the country were represented in the project.
Signal Elections serve as a way to familiarize young people with the electoral process before they reach voting age themselves, giving them hands-on experience with how voting works and fostering awareness of civic participation.
