Notion, the productivity software company, is shutting down its email service, Notion Mail, effective September 22. The decision comes as users increasingly delegate email management to AI agents, with many no longer opening their inbox directly. In a post on X, Notion stated that more than half of Notion Mail users now manage emails without ever opening their inbox. The company is doubling down on using agents to handle email workflows.

Notion Mail is integrated with Gmail, so all emails in the inbox will remain intact. However, users must export drafts and scheduled emails before the shutdown if they wish to keep them. Additionally, snippets and auto-labeling instructions can be exported for use elsewhere. Notion emphasized that its email-based agents will continue to function after Notion Mail is discontinued.

Notion first introduced its email product in preview mode in 2024, following its acquisition of security-focused productivity startup Skiff. The company aimed to combine email with Notion AI, offering features like automatic labeling, filtering, and scheduling. The product became widely available in April 2025 to compete with services like Superhuman and Fyxer. Newer startups like AgentMail are also building email services specifically designed for AI agents, aligning with Notion's vision.
