A local ceasefire in Oleshky, a southern Ukrainian city under Russian occupation, has held for roughly its first 30 hours, France 24 reports. The truce took effect on Tuesday and covers only this city, while the war between Moscow and Kyiv continues in other parts of Ukraine.

According to the broadcaster, the pause in fighting has been observed through the first day and night in a city that has been devastated by the war. It is expected to remain in place until Sunday.

Why it matters

Oleshky is one of the southern Ukrainian cities controlled by Russia. There is no general ceasefire between the two countries, which makes this local arrangement notable: fighting elsewhere along the front goes on, but in this city it has, for now, stopped.

The source does not say what the terms of the truce are, who brokered it, or whether it could be extended after Sunday. The report from the scene was prepared by France 24 correspondent Emerald Maxwell.
