Temporary Ceasefire in Oleshky: Residents Have Until Friday Afternoon to Leave as Aid Distribution Nears
A temporary ceasefire is in effect in Russian-occupied Oleshky in Ukraine's Kherson region to allow a humanitarian mission. Residents wishing to leave have until 2 p.m. on October 30, and aid for those who stay is due to start after 2:30 p.m.
A humanitarian mission has been prepared in Oleshky, a Russian-occupied city in Ukraine's southern Kherson region. The routes the convoy will use have been cleared of mines. Residents who want to leave the city have until 2 p.m. on Friday, October 30. Aid for those who stay will be handed out after 2:30 p.m. The mission is possible because of a temporary ceasefire that lets people depart or receive supplies.
Convoy ready to depart
Russian human rights commissioner Yana Lantratova and her Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Lubinets said the humanitarian convoy is ready to set off. It will head to the city's central district hospital.
Lubinets said delegations from Ukraine, Russia and the United States have gathered to coordinate the next steps of the mission. Journalists from all three countries are also present.
Terms of the ceasefire
Russia and Ukraine halted fighting in Oleshky for the purposes of the mission. The deal was brokered by U.S. first lady Melania Trump. The truce took effect on the morning of October 27 and will remain in place until late on the evening of November 1.
The source does not say how many people remain in the city or how many plan to leave.
