OpenAI rolls out visual ads alongside ChatGPT image generation
OpenAI is adding visual display ads that will appear next to images generated by ChatGPT, expanding its advertising push for free and low-cost users. The ads will debut this month in the U.S. only, with a limited group of test advertisers.

OpenAI is expanding its advertising lineup within ChatGPT by introducing visual display ads that will appear alongside images users ask the chatbot to generate. The feature will launch later this month, initially limited to the U.S. market, featuring an initial test group of advertisers promoting their products and services.
The company says the ads will be clearly labeled and will not influence the answers ChatGPT provides to users. Once rolled out globally, the ads are expected to give advertisers access to ChatGPT's 1.2 billion weekly users.
Context and competition
The move comes shortly after Meta launched Muse, a free agentic AI app that is emerging as a growing competitor to leading chatbots including ChatGPT. OpenAI first introduced ads earlier this year to help sustain its free and low-cost subscription tiers, later expanding the program to India in August.
With the new visual ad format, OpenAI aims to attract advertisers who want to use richer imagery to tell their brand stories. At the same time, inserting ads into the chat experience risks disrupting usability — a trade-off that may be partly intentional, as the friction could nudge more casual users toward paid subscriptions to avoid seeing ads.
Measurement tools and partnerships
Alongside the new ad format, OpenAI is broadening its measurement tools and partner ecosystem. Its click attribution partners now include AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge and Tenjin, alongside full-funnel measurement partners Fospha, Measured and INCRMNTAL. OpenAI has also teamed up with Haus, Measured and WorkMagic to support geo-based advertising experiments.
The company is additionally developing brand suitability evaluation pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science to help advertisers better understand the ChatGPT advertising environment. Together, these moves signal OpenAI's effort to turn ChatGPT into a sustainable ad-supported business for its free and low-cost plan users.
